STAR

Schley County High School is proud to announce our 2021-22 STAR Student, Ghufran Bhatti, son of Sawsan Momin. Ghufran has chosen his eighth grade language arts teacher, Dr. Elaine Black, as his STAR Teacher.

The PAGE Student Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) program honors Georgia’s highest achieving high school seniors and the teachers who have been most instrumental in their academic development.. Every accredited high school in Georgia is eligible to participate in this preeminent student/teacher academic recognition.

To obtain the STAR nomination, high school students must have the highest score on any single test date of the SAT taken through the November test date of their senior year and be in the top 10 percent or top 10 students of their class based on grade point average. High school STAR Students compete for system titles, and System STAR Students in turn compete for region-wide honors in the 12 STAR Regions. Region Winners compete for state PAGE STAR scholarships and awards. STAR Teachers continue with their STAR Students at every level of the program.

“I chose Dr. Black because she was the only teacher to connect to me on a personal level,” Ghufran said. “When things were not always so bright, she gave me hope. (She) was my lifeline in high school.”

About Ghufran, Dr. Black said, “Ghufran..is an eccentric, eclectic individual. He is a young man who is wise beyond his years. His passion and quest for knowledge exemplify an eternal flame that will afford him opportunities whereby he will never cease to grow.”

Ghufran plans to attend either Cornell University or Georgia Tech and major in chemical engineering. According to Dr. Black, he is ready: “His intellectual knowledge will open many doors in life and will enable him to achieve and accomplish any endeavors he envisions.” Ghufran credits his favorite teacher: “She is the reason I have made it so far as a student….she did more for me than any other teacher ever has.”
